week 3 journal

Chemistry is one of the subjects i do not fully understand, i apperantly failed the first three quizs. However i have confidence of doing well the next test, i should not just give up on the subject just because i'm lousy at it, but instead take the bull by its horns and work towards scoring in chemistry. Just a few days ago, i tried solving a rubik's cube.To my surprise, it is the ultimate cryptic invention ever. Everytime i get so close to solving one side to form the same colour, i would have to rearrange everything again, which eventuates back to square one again. I hope to subjugate the rubik's cube by the year end.

featured article- getting rich by luck

Have you ever felt tempted when you see the top prize of a million, in the lottery section of the newspaper? Don't worry, its normal for all humans to be tempted by greed as who doesn't want to get rich the easy way? However, the risk taken is just as big as the reward.
Statistics have shown that more than half of the Singaporeans gamble, which includes many forms of gambling, for example, legal gambling at the casino, illegal gambling at gambling dens, buying 4D and toto from singapore pool and stocks or bluechips. Sinagpore pools have shown statistic of more than 10,000 people buy lottery and 4D everyday. To me, 4D and ToTo is very unrealistic, the chances of winning is so low because of the thousands of different combinations the winning number could be. It is like throwing a thousand faced dice and hope the face you spend money buying shows at the top of the dice. However, it is alright to buy these lottery once in a while, using a small portion of extra money you put aside, just to try your luck.
Now with the new intergrated resort(IR) coming up in singapore, it is going to tempt more singaporean to turn to gambling to get rich. The goverment purpose of building the IR is to promote singapore as a tourism spot and attract more foreign investers, however at the expense of more of our own people gambling. It is not gambling that ruin many singaporeans lives, it is gambling addiction that ruin their lives. There are three stages to gamblign addiction, Firstly, The Winning Phase, the person starts gambling as a social pastime, experiences the euphoria of winning and this fuels further gambling behaviour. Secondly, the Losing Phase In this phase the gambler starts to lose control and becomes impulsive. He tries to win back his losses. If losses accumulate, he will lie and cover up to escape detection. Thirdly, the Desperation PhaseAt this phase, life is out of control as losses become unmanageable. Gamblers feel powerless, remorseful and desperate. Then, the person will turn to borrowing money from banks or loan sharks. If unable to pay back, which happens in most of the cases, the person's whole life goes down the drain, his family, his career, everything.
So, as you can see how people nowadays are tempted easily by greed and people who try to take shortcuts in life to get rich, end up in regret before they even know it.Hence, everything comes with a price to pay, nothing in the world is free.
